Clustering Thoughts

Creativity Challenge 1999 #8

Gabriele Lusser Rico in her book: WRITING THE NATURAL WAY, shares an idea generating technique she encourages her readers to use when they feel stuck or are suffering "white or blank paper-itis".

She calls it "Clustering"

She recommends taking a blank sheet and writing a single key word in the middle of it.

Then she tells the readers to begin writing every word that comes to mind randomly or deliberately. Just to write them down randomly around the sheet.

After doing that for a few minutes, 6 to 12, she suggests the reader begin to look for patterns among the words that are related to the original word.

From this beginning she tells the reader to then begin to write.

This week I am suggesting we do this each day for 12 to 24 minutes with a different word each day.

Begin by writing out one of your challenges in a single problem/challenge statement.

In my case currently:

My challenge is to create 4 integrated programs that comprise my chosen focus for the next 5 to 10 years as a speaker and consultant. The goal of the programs and combined program is to help my clients in the S.P.R.E.A.D.ng™ of creative thinking throughout their workplaces in all employees for the benefit of everyone professionally, personally and profitably.

  • First step is to select 5 key words or key phrases (one for each week day)
  • Second step choose one of the 5 to use on Monday (following on each of the other 4 days with another choice).
  • Third step write the chosen word or short phrase in the center of a blank sheet of paper, 8 1/2 x 11 up to entire wall size.
  • Fourth step spend 12 to 24 minutes writing every word that comes to mind, deliberately not trying to control my mind.
  • Fifth step repeat step four deliberately trying to control my mind. (optional)
  • Sixth step look for the patterns among the words and the resulting suggestive ideas or directions
  • Seventh step use the results to write, think, plan, design, create with.

Have fun this week let your mind relax while you let it provide you ideas and direction on one of your challenges.

Be creative whenever possible. It is always your choice.
