Associational Connections/Chaining

Cre8ng™ Challenge 1999 - 36

This week's Challenge was sparked by "Jack R. Tally", a member of the CREATIVITY email list. When I asked people on a mix of creativity focused email lists for their favorite creative thinking tools one that Jack mentioned was....

associational connections/chaining

This technique I know as the technique of taking two totally unrelated things or ideas or people and deliberately looking for the associations, connections, links between them.

Often I have read stories, anecdotes or examples from noted creative people from science, engineering, invention, the arts, architecture, design of how they used this technique whether they considered it a conscious technique or not.

So this week let's practice finding, discovering, creating "associations", "connections", or "links" between things.

  • Monday list 6 to 12 "associations", "connections", or "links" between a frog and a concrete block.

  • Tuesday list 6 to 12 "associations", "connections", or "links" between your favorite automobile and a baseball game.

  • Wednesday list 6 to 12 "associations", "connections", or "links" between a prune and the government of your town.

  • Thursday list 6 to 12 "associations", "connections", or "links" between ice cream making and space travel.

  • Friday list 6 to 12 "associations", "connections", or "links" between squirrels and a printed calendar.

Please share your results.

Have a very creative week!

Alan
