Provocative Convergent Thinking

Creativity Challenge 2002 #16

This week let's practice convergent thinking using provocative viewpoints throughout asking questions, questions, questions.

First generate a list of 12 to 24 provocative viewpoints or people who might have provocative viewpoints in a given situation. i.e.:

  • homeless child
  • a drug addict
  • tax collector
  • space alien
  • old west gunslinger
  • etc.

Second collect a mix of new ideas you are working with or have generated recently for a project or challenge at home, school or work. Then each day randomly select one idea and 3 provocateurs and spend 15 to 20 minutes generating a list of questions the individual people might ask to discover if the idea is valid to become a solution. Try to imagine yourself as the individuals: a homeless child, a tax collector, a gunslinger, or a Nordic sailor or Spanish pirate and try to think as much as they might.

Please share some of your results.
