To become a speaker, trainer, consultant who speaks internationally

Here are some of my tips from the past 37 years of speaking internationally from teaching in a Summer Abroad program in 1982 in Italy to speaking at conferences on 6 continents and in over 50 countries of the 93 I have traveled to, through and within.


1st – develop your material and reputation in your town, state, country.

2nd – develop friendships with people in countries around the world

3rd – get published in newsletters, journals, magazines and books in other countries

4th – travel to other countries and spend time with your friends in those countries

5th – if asked to speak in other countries agree to, whether for full-fee, partial fee, expenses or free (at your own expense).  Experiencing me in person has developed my career for 41 years, not brochures, audio tapes, video tapes, e-zines, newsletters.

Books and articles have helped and occasionally my website.

Most of my work has happened because people experience me FIRST-HAND

6th – as many to all of my NSA mentors: Robert Henry, Nido Qubein, Terry Paulson, Naomi Rhode, Karp all taught me over the years SPEAK, SPEAK, SPEAK, SPEAK and you will be asked to SPEAK.

7th – speak at International Conferences held in your city, state, country and meet the speakers, trainers, consultants from other countries and develop friendships with them that you maintain thru mail, email, SKYPE, face to face.

8th – speak at organizations and ask your contacts if they have offices or chapters in other countries and ask for referrals and follow up on them.

9th – when you are traveling offer to speak at civic, social, Toastmasters and professional speaker groups (national, regional or local) (NSAA, NSNZ, APSS, PSA-France, GSF)

10th – send in proposals to speak at GSF meetings around the globe

11th – join and become active in the International Speakers PEG in NSA

12th – join and become active in GSF

13th – be active in professional associations in your field and markets
(Creative Problem Solving Institute, Creative Education Foundation, American Creativity Association, African Creativity Association, Creative Research Foundation, etc.)

14th – submit and present at annual or regional meetings of the professional organizations you belong to (NSA – National and Chapter, Toastmasters – Local, District, State, National, International)

15th – keep in touch regular thru email, SKYPE, newsletters, etc. with your growing list of international contacts, friends, clients

16th – ask for referrals from your growing list of international contacts, friends, clients

17th – do radio, tv, www interviews internationally

18th – do webinars and podcasts inviting your growing list of international contacts, friends, clients
19th – create a website that attracts international assns, organizations and corporations

20th – help international speaker, trainer, consultant friends find contacts and work in the US.

I will add to this list as additional techniques come back to memory.

21st –  BREAK BREAD with other speakers, trainers, consultants, clients (before, during and after working with them).   This has been the most valuable and meaningful way I have learned to work with people as I develop friendships with them.

22nd – when possible accept invitations to be a guest of speakers, trainers, consultants, clients  (before, during and after working with them).  This I have done in several US states and countries around the globe.

23rd –  continually learn from mentors and fellow professionals

24th  – continuous learning to reach higher and higher goals

25th  –  some speakers gain by associating with very famous professionals

26th  –  write globally – thanks to the internet, www, Facebook, Twitter and many others I have been doing this since 1990 and do nearly every day.

27th – research bureaus in the countries you want to work in

28th – seek out training marketing companies in the countries (AMA – USA, SIM – Singapore, Thomvell – Malaysia) and others.

29th – contact the USA Chambers of Commerce in the countries you want to work in.

30th – approach the newspapers, journals, newsletters in the countries to offer to submit articles related to your topic and how the content will benefit people in those countries.

I have met and gotten to know since 1976 when I gave my first presentation
in West Palm Beach for the Palm Beach Chapter of the American Institute of Architects
when I returned from my first extended international trip that lasted 110 days in 1977
